Mingulay : An island and its people

Mingulay : An island and its people

Mingulay : An island and its people , by Ben Buxton.

This book is written in English and is 289 pages.

A remote and ruggedly beautiful island lies at the southern end of the Outer Hebrides. Mingulay was once home to more than 150 people who lived by crofting, fishing and catching seabirds on cliffs which are amongst the highest in Scotland. But, set in the stormy Atlantic ocean, life became increasingly tough and the people sought to have better lives elsewhere by grabbing land on a less remote island. By 1912, they had abandoned Mingulay to the seabirds and sheep.

The story of St Kilda is well documented, but tha of Mingulay and its two neighbours , Bernary and Pabbay, no less poignant, is told here for the first time.

For this revised edition, Ben Buxton has incorporated the remarkable discoveries from recent archaeological fieldwork and from reaserch in newly available documents.
