Helping the community of Barra and Vatersay to flourish
Renovation
A new chapter for our community building
Bùth Bharraigh has been at the heart of Castlebay since 2013, when we moved into the former Co-operative store after it had stood empty for four years. In July 2023, we took another huge step and secured ownership of the building through a successful Community Asset Transfer. Now, we're ready to give the building a new lease of life.
Planning permission is now in place for our renovation project!
The building was constructed in the 1980s and is now in need of a major upgrade. While so much happens inside Bùth Bharraigh, from supporting local producers and businesses to providing visitor information and community services, the building itself doesn't yet reflect what goes on inside. As one of the first places many visitors see when they arrive on Barra, we want Bùth Bharraigh to provide a warm and welcoming first impression of our island. Our renovation will transform the existing building while keeping Bùth Bharraigh at the heart of Castlebay.
The renovation will help create a better showcase for local products, increase footfall and support the businesses and producers who supply Bùth Bharraigh.
The project has also been identified as a high priority in the Local Place Plan for Barra and Vatersay, recognising its importance to the local economy, community wellbeing, entrepreneurship and social infrastructure.
