A leap forward for Bùth Bharraigh
Planning permission has now been granted for Bùth Bharraigh to begin the long-awaited remodelling and refurbishment of its premises. Plans include a dedicated visitor information area, a larger cafe offering harbour seascapes with wide open views from the new larger windows, more shop floor space and a customer toilet. This design has been chosen with flexibility at its core, so meetings, events and community or business involvement can be facilitated in the space. The landmark building will benefit from a tasteful external facelift as well as a more energy-efficient interior. As ever, the Bùth will support local employment and training opportunities into the future.
Bùth Bharraigh Manager Sarah said, "These planned improvements will firstly mean an improved working environment for staff and volunteers. In addition, it represents a major step forward for the community’s wealth, wellbeing and a route to market for their handmade items and local services and accommodation. Everybody benefits from this initiative and the Buth is proud to be able to offer access to these improved facilities in the future. The first task is to raise the finance to allow this project to progress and to develop this landmark building in Castlebay."

BACKGROUND:
Bùth Bharraigh was formed in October 2013 after a year long feasibility study. It is an award-winning social enterprise that is a route to market for local producers and provides goods and services for which there is a need within the community. Bùth Bharraigh have been operating out of the former Co-op building since December 2013 and purchased the building in July 2023 following a community asset transfer. The cost of the renovation is £1 million.
